About the Theme
The central message of the book Hope in the Dark: Untold Histories, Wild Possibilities by Rebecca Solnit is that hope is the cornerstone of action.
The unknowable nature of the future leaves us in darkness, we cannot see through to the end of the road. Hope can include feelings of expectation, excitement, and change. But change can’t happen without our actions. Guided by faith and bolstered by community, we must be the light for one another. There is hope in the unknown, in the dark. From this mystery comes the possibility of a better world.

The theologian Walter Brueggeman said, “Memory produces hope in the same way that amnesia produces despair.” This extraordinary statement reminds us that though hope is about the future, grounds for hope lie in the records and recollections of the past.

The 52+ year history of Dignity Philadelphia and all that has been accomplished in that time should give us hope for the future. No matter what challenges lie ahead–whether legal protections being stripped from queer people, or smaller challenges like addressing our financial needs–our community will rise to the occasion, as we always have.
About the Art
The dove graphic used in this campaign was designed by Libby Kercher! Originally created as an option for a DignityUSA t-shirt, the dove is a perfect symbol our 'Hope in the Dark' 2025 Christmas Appeal.

Doves have come to be known as symbols of hope and peace. As queer Catholics, we know what it's like to work for our own self-love, as well as for the reconciliation of our faith and identities. We also have long fought for the rights and dignity of LGBTQ+ people and other marginalized groups, even when the odds of change happening seemed slim.

Libby's dove is a beautiful encapsulation of the spirit of our community and the hope that grounds us in working to achieve a better world.
